The myth of vocabulary
Examiner reports from 2019 through 2024 are remarkably consistent: the English Essay paper is failed not because candidates lack vocabulary but because their arguments lack a load-bearing structure. Memorised phrases on a hollow outline produce a worse essay than plain prose on a strong one.
The three-tier outline
A reliable structure is a thesis, three substantive claims, and a counter-claim that you resolve. Each claim earns one body paragraph; the counter-claim earns two — one to honour it, one to overcome it.
Spend the first thirty minutes only on the outline. Candidates who skip this step and start writing immediately consistently score below 35 of 100.
